6/8/2023 0 Comments 1972 novel first blood![]() ![]() Accepting that conflict is inevitable, we long for conflicts where the issues are clear, or at least seem clear. ![]() The fact is we still hunger for stories like this, where the body count is high and the villains are disposable. If you want more, especially if you want to think more, this isn’t the story for you. Send the Vietnam Veteran back into the jungle and have him right the wrongs of a bad war by dispatching a hoard of bad guys. (Worried about the wrongs some American soldiers committed? Go watch Platoon.) As a young red-blooded American boy, I loved this action story. It’s really about righting the wrongs committed against American soldiers during the Vietnam War. But it contains additional material, including a primer on how Rambo became a master archer. This novel is a companion to the film version. Accepting that premise, this book/film succeeds. It was also about calming the fears of their wide-eyed children (me included). This was a time when the words Soviets and Russians were synonyms for “bad guys.” In particular, 1980s Cold War fiction was not just about calming the nuclear fears of Baby Boomers. ![]() ![]() Cross reference it with films like Red Dawn or Rocky IV. It’s important to remember that Rambo: First Blood Part II is not just Cold War fiction. ![]()

![]() ![]() I would 100% recommend this book to both my family and friends. I also didn’t have to read them in order if I didn’t want to. They also all left me feeling happy and relaxed.Ī Place Like Home was a definite page-turner and I loved that I could sit and read a complete story in just one sitting. I have been trying to work out which story is my favourite and I have come to realise that I can’t choose one story over another as they all were perfect, enthralling, and engaging. They all came across as real and believable making for an enjoyable read. I also adored all the main female characters in each of the stories. I love the author’s use of descriptive language, the scenery, and the settings which all came alive in my mind. I have been a huge fan of Rosamunde Pilcher’s novels for many years and this book felt like it was the perfect read for me. The scene that I particularly remembered was the one where Laurie’s sisters send him off for his first day at school wrapped in scarves with a hot potato in his pocket. ![]() In Cider with Rosie he writes about his family and friends, his school days and the eccentric characters who lived and worked in Slad. Lee moved there at the age of three with his mother and siblings at the end of the First World War. Published in 1959, this first volume looks back on Lee’s childhood in the small Cotswold village of Slad in Gloucestershire. Laurie Lee was a British novelist and poet most famous for his autobiographical trilogy which begins with Cider with Rosie and continues with As I Walked Out One Midsummer Morning and A Moment of War. ![]() ![]() ![]() If you live or vacation near a seashore, you pretty much need to own Gibbons's Scallop, and if you are at all interested in wild herbs as medicine or just as a nice accompaniment to your food, then the herbs book is for you. He did this in several other useful books, notably his Stalking the Blue-Eyed Scallop, which covers the seaside environment, as well as self-explanatory Stalking the Healthful Herbs. But Gibbons' wanderings gave him unusual authority to write from a national perspective. The vast majority of foraging books are regional in scope, and this is not necessarily bad- in fact I have several regional guides in this post. He is knowledgeable, has obviously eaten everything he writes about, and most importantly, he's traveled. Gibbons has been an inspiration for me forever, and I've returned to his books over and over. The first, best, and most compelling foraging book for me must be Euell Gibbons's Stalking the Wild Asparagus, the book that got me foraging for things beyond what my family knew about. And so it happens I often get asked about my go-to foraging books. ![]() As my book manuscript comes into shape-almost done!-I find myself referencing a stack of foraging books several feet high. ![]() 6/6/2023 0 Comments Binti okorafor![]() ![]() Okorafor is the daughter of Nigerian immigrants.
